mav scb January 12, 2018 As a companion piece to MAV’s not-resolutions—her “January notes”—from last week, I wanted to post some of my not-quite-resolutions for the new year. Let’s call them intentions. Some of these are the same intentions I have every year. I think of this less as failure and more as perseverance. What is a new year but a chance to begin again (and again and again). —SCB :: Continue with the bullet journal that I began at the end of last year. I began making the daily lists in the journal because I was too depressed and anxious to make it through the day. In the beginning, my lists were pedantically detailed as I needed reminders of the most basic actions of self-care. As I progress, I am able to focus on bigger goals as well as manage my work productivity. :: Revisit the idea of weekly food prep. Take a few dedicated hours once a week to clean, trim, and chop fruits and vegetables, so they are meal-ready. Make a double batch of soup. Hard-boil eggs. Cook a pot of beans and grains. Toast a batch granola. Use up or toss what is headed past its prime. A gift to myself for the week, and more fun than when you are squeezing it all in on the margins of your day. :: Carry a camera and shoot more film. Embrace the haphazard, delayed gratification that light on film creates. :: Turn off my phone. Turn to more face-to-face interactions. :: Get outside. Always the right thing. Happy new year.
