This year I have decided to buy at least 90% of my holiday gifts here in Portland, Maine (maybe 100% if I can make it happen). I really love the idea of supporting local especially at a time when our local shops need our support more than ever.

Last night I walked the First Friday Art Walk and started my research.

First stop — chelliswilson where they had a beautiful new holiday installation (gold leaf, roses, branches). Gorgeous!

Second stop — Rogues Gallery where Jonathan Levitt had some new work on the walls. Really inspiring stuff.

Third stop — Rabelais where they were getting ready for an opening next weekend. Cookbooks are going to be big gift items on my list this year and Rabelais is where it’s at!

Fourth stop — Field where Colin and Friederike were hosting new work including their annual porcelain snowballs. I found one that was made just for me and bought it straight away (no need to just keep my eye out for others, right?).

I made a few other stops and then wandered into the cold night in search of dinner. I’ll keep you posted on my progress as I try to support local this year. I think in my town full of creativity and originality everywhere it’s going to be a snap! Why not give it a try in your town?
