mav scb October 21, 2016 Hello and happy Friday! We are very excited to be writing to you again. We started “blogging” with words in early 2009, with our photograph-based projects, A Year of Mornings and A Year of Evenings, occurring during the two previous years, 2007 and 2008. As a new addition to this site, every Friday you will find something from Stephanie (SCB) or myself, Maria (MAV), in this space. Our Newsletter is still the best place to stay in touch (you can sign up at the bottom of our site) but we wanted to be able to talk to you a bit more. So, hi and here goes! ~ Lately, I have been thinking quite a bit about my writing style. I love to write, be it in emails, cards, texts or for book projects, but I know damn well I am not that good at it. When I say good in this instance I mean plainly, I don’t actually know what I am doing. Stephanie usually has to give my words a careful read to assist with editing. (Thank you for the years of editing, SCB!) I often go back to a book that Stephanie gave me, “The Elements of Style,” by William Strunk, Jr., as a reference. Here is one passage that sat with me this week: When writing with a computer, you must guard against wordiness. The click and flow of a word processor can be seductive, and you may find yourself adding a few unnecessary words or even a whole passage just to experience the pleasure of running your fingers cover the keyboard and watching your words appear on the screen. It is always a good idea to reread your writing later and ruthlessly delete the excess. Goodbye for now! xo, MAV Share TWITTER FACEBOOK TUMBLR PINTEREST EMAIL
